The Coen Brothers Head To Television With The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs

As two of the most exciting filmmakers of our generation, it's important that we sit up and take notice whenever Joel and Ethan Coen announce a new project. After all, they haven't been terribly active in recent years, having only given us one film since 2013's Inside Llewyn Davis, which came in the form of the so-so Hail, Caesar! However, it seems that the brothers are getting back into the swing of things as Deadline reports that they're heading to television.

As two of the most exciting filmmakers of our generation, it’s important that we sit up and take notice whenever Joel and Ethan Coen announce a new project. After all, they haven’t been terribly active in recent years, having only given us one film since 2013’s Inside Llewyn Davis, which came in the form of the so-so Hail, Caesar! However, it seems that the brothers are getting back into the swing of things as Deadline reports that they’re heading to the small screen.

That’s right, Joel and Ethan will partner with Annapurna Television for The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, a Western anthology series and their first venture into TV. The duo wrote the script and will also direct and produce through their Mike Zoss Productions label. Meanwhile, Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle will exec produce.

“We are very excited to be working with Megan and Sue on this project,” said Joel and Ethan Coen.

No strangers to the Western, having brought us the excellent True Grit, not to mention several other films that heavily borrowed elements from the genre, this seems like an interesting project for the brothers. We don’t have plot details just yet, but apparently The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs will “intertwine six different storylines” and be released via an “innovative approach that could combine television and theatrical.” We’re not sure what that means, but we’re intrigued, to say the least.

It’s still very early days on this one, but now that it’s been announced, expect interest in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs to pick up significantly as it comes together. The Coens moving to television is a big deal in and of itself, but when you throw a Western anthology into the mix, well, it just becomes that much more exciting.

Tell us, what do you think the brothers have planned for us with this project? Take to the comments section down below and give us your thoughts!
