Marvel has released a first look at The Clone Conspiracy #5, the final chapter of Dan Slott and Jim Cheung’s Spider-Man event series. In the recently released fourth instalment, the Jackal revealed his plan to turn everyone on Earth into a clone, a bizarre twist which will have to be addressed here before he returns to his heroic ways in his own solo series.

In the sneak peek below, the clones (and regular people) are transforming into Carrions – broken down, mutated versions of clones – before they “die” and are then brought back by Ben Reilly. This is a good way of removing all of the returning characters from the board, though you have to believe that at least a few will end up sticking around.

Thankfully, Uncle Ben won’t be among them, though it very much looks like Gwen Stacy might as she betrays Peter Parker. As you no doubt know, she’s been loyal to the Jackal from the start, mostly because she blames Spider-Man for her original death.

For more on what to expect from this issue of The Clone Conspiracy, here’s the solicitation text courtesy of Marvel.

• The Jackal takes drastic measures that Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen and Scarlet Spider could never see coming.
• Jackal’s coup de grâce not only sets a host of resurrected villains loose on the unsuspecting streets of San Francisco, but threatens the lives of everyone on Earth!
• After months of waiting, heartache and incredible surprises, THIS is the issue Spider-fans around the world will be talking about for years to come!

Many comic book readers are ready for Slott to move on from The Amazing Spider-Man, though this is one Marvel event which has been well-received by fans and critics alike so far. For that reason, it’s easy to imagine him sticking around for the time being, and honestly, we’re be quite alright with that.

The Clone Conspiracy #5 hits comic shops on February 15th.
