Since its debut, the series always had a specific trio at its core: Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena (Nina Dobrev). Unfortunately, the latter decided to skip town as it were upon the conclusion of season 6, but thankfully, has decided to reward the fans by putting in an appearance in the upcoming series finale.

Dobrev herself confirmed her involvement via an Instagram post:

Furthermore, the photo confirms that the finale will be written by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, with the latter directing. As for Williamson, he had this to say regarding the news:

“I’m thrilled to bring this show to an end the way we always intended – with Nina back to help us say goodbye. I’m so excited to have Nina back to ensure our farewell episode is truly epic!” Plec and Williamson wrote the final episode, which is being directed by Plec.”

Despite the end looming, viewers can take solace in knowing the aforementioned spinoff, The Originals, is set to return this spring and has not yet been cancelled itself. So, if you want this universe to live on in some fashion, just keep tuning in.

The Vampire Diaries airs on Friday nights on The CW.
