Call off the search party, for Marvel and Freeform’s Cloak and Dagger TV series has found its two leading stars.
Deadline has the scoop, confirming that while Noah Gray-Cabey and Debby Ryan were reportedly in the running early on, the superhero roles of Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson have fallen to Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph. Ordered straight to series back in 2016, Cloak and Dagger chronicles the coming-of-age romance between Tandy (Dagger) and Bowen (Cloak), who struggle to wrangle their superhuman abilities under control. Olivia Holt’s Tandy has the power to emit light daggers on a whim, while Tyrone is able to engulf others in darkness at a moment’s notice. Together, they’re able to keep a lid on their respective powers, but a superheroic romance threatens to complicate an already complicated situation.
It’ll skew toward a younger audience, given its teenage leads, and it’ll be fascinating to see how audiences react to a more lighthearted spin on the superhero genre. Joe Pokaski has been elected executive producer and showrunner for Cloak and Dagger, and reacted to today’s casting coup as so:
“The characters of Tandy and Tyrone have always stood out to me ever since I first met them in the pages of Marvel comics when I was a boy. When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We’re so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe.”
Cloak and Dagger will become the third live-action Marvel series to grace the airwaves after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming Inhumans TV series. Beyond the Lights director Gina Prince-Bythewood is attached to helm the pilot episode.
