Deadline brings word today that Lionsgate has formally swooped in to acquire the rights for Most Likely to Murder, a new black comedy headed up by Rachel Bloom and Adam Pally. It’s been placed firmly on the fast track, too, with the studio eyeing a production start sometime next month.

Dubbed “Rear Window for stoners,” by co-writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, How I Met Your Mother), Most Likely to Murder kicks off when Billy (Pally), the most popular kid in high school, “comes back to his hometown 10 years later to find he’s no longer cool and the girl he still has feelings for is now dating the former high school outcast. When the outcast’s mother dies under mysterious circumstances, Billy becomes obsessed with proving that she was actually murdered.”

Not only will Doug Mand hold a credit on the screenplay, but he’ll also star opposite Bloom and Pally in the finished product, who are both attached to produce. Meanwhile, Mand and Gregor will leverage executive producing duties between them.

After scooping up the Golden Globe for her eye-catching turn in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend last year – incidentally, Bloom was also up for the same accolade in 2017, but ultimately lucked out to Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross – Rachel Bloom is one of the more in-demand stars working on the small screen. Today’s casting coup heralds an exciting jump over to film, and it’ll be intriguing to discover how her blend of comedy plays out on the silver screen for Most Likely to Murder. Adam Pally, meanwhile, is best known for his performances across Dirty Grandpa and The Mindy Project.
