After almost two decades and eight appearances (nine if you count his brief cameo in X-Men: First Class) as one of the most iconic comic book characters in history, Hugh Jackman stepped away from the role of Wolverine for good in James Mangold‘s visceral, emotionally charged Logan. Many of the more recent TV spots for the film have focused on the massive critical acclaim the threequel’s received, but now, 20th Century Fox has released a new “Legacy” featurette, which pays tribute to Jackman’s tenure as the tortured mutant warrior.
The video includes footage of Jackman as Wolvie from Bryan Singer’s first X-Men movie all the way up to Logan. There are even a few shots from some of the less well received installments in the franchise, such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand – though, to be fair, even they had some great moments featuring the character. Plus, we get interview snippets with Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier) and Logan director James Mangold, who says he didn’t just want to make Jackman’s last Wolverine movie, but rather his best Wolverine movie.
According to a vast majority of fans and critics, Mangold achieved that very thing with his powerful swansong to the beloved mutant. There’s little doubt that someone else will step into the role eventually, but even if this is to be the last time we see those signature muttonchops, ol’ Canucklehead certainly went out with a bang.
