Jaume-Collet Serra, who is perhaps best known for his action-oriented collaborations with Liam Neeson (see: Unknown, Non-Stop, Run All Night and upcoming thriller The Commuter), cropped up in conversation amid the ongoing episode of MTMP, where reporter Jeff Sneider named-dropped as a potential candidate for the gig. It should be noted that this merely indicates that Serra is one of many filmmakers currently populating Warner’s wishlist – you know, assuming Sneider’s sources are sound – which has also made room for Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), Daniel Espinosa (Life) and Mel Gibson, who is coming hot off the Oscar-nominated war epic, Hacksaw Ridge. Gibson has seemingly emerged as the early frontrunner, having held preliminary talks with the studio, but there’s still no sign of a confirmation at press time.

If nothing else, today’s rumor claiming that Jaume-Collet Serra is up for the gig serves as a pointed reminder that Suicide Squad 2 remains a high priority for Warner Bros. David Ayer’s villainous offshoot may have bombed with critics, but an international box office haul of $745 million ensured Task Force X has a future on the big screen. Not only that, but there’s also the Gotham City Sirens spinoff gestating at Warner which, incidentally, heralds a reunion between Ayer and Margot Robbie, who is back, back, back as the wicked Harley Quinn.

Suicide Squad 2 is simmering in the nascent stages of development for now, but with the rumor mill operating at full tilt, we fully expect to catch wind of the sequel’s director in the coming months.
