Could Deadpool 2 herald the next step in the evolution of Vanessa Carlysle? Morena Baccarin certainly hopes so, though the actress shied away from questions directly relating to Copycat.
Cinema Blend caught up recently with Baccarin in anticipation of Gotham, and it wasn’t long before the conversation veered from DC television to one of Marvel’s greatest anti-heroes. We are, of course, referring to the Merc With a Mouth. Deadpool 2 may still be on the hunt for a release date – along with an actor to play Cable, after Michael Shannon was reportedly labeled first-choice by Fox – but the excitement for David Leitch’s follow-up is palpable, and Baccarin has now weighed in on Vanessa’s arc going into the sequel.
Reflecting on the fallout from the original movie, the former Firefly actress teased the ways in which her relationship with Wade has evolved since his ludicrous encounter with Ed Skrein’s Ajax, most of which Vanessa spent locked away as the damsel in distress. So, by the time Deadpool 2 arrives, expect Morena Baccarin to slip into a slightly different character.
“I would love to see the evolution of that character, and how she becomes that. I also think it’s very interesting to see the relationship with her and Wade after the whole thing. His whole demeanor changing. And just how they continue their relationship.”
Does that pave the way for Vanessa to complete her transition to Copycat? Not necessarily. Although Carlysle’s alter-ego has long fuelled the rumor mill, Morena Baccarin was quick to side-step any questions relating to Copycat, stressing that those creative decisions rest in the hands of the Powers That Be.
“Obviously everyone wants to see Copycat. I have no idea if that’s something they have in the works or not.”
Deadpool 2 has no firm release date at the time of writing, which is hardly surprising given that David Leitch’s anti-hero sequel is yet to enter production in earnest. It’s now approaching the tail-end of its casting process though, with a Cable-related announcement due imminently. Stay tuned for more.
