Although many of you reading this are probably no stranger to attending conventions yourselves, it’s not all of us that have the good fortune of venturing to San Diego Comic-Con every July. But until we can cross such a thing off our bucket lists, there are luckily TV specials we can vicariously live through, one of which is SyFy’s Live From Comic-Con.
Ever since G4 unfortunately went the way of the dinosaur, there’s been a significant crater left in geek culture coverage, to say the least. In the time since, various networks that shall remain nameless have done a decent job of filling the niche, but more often than not, they use that allotted TV time as a Trojan Horse, deciding to promote their fall prime time lineups that often have nothing to do with anything remotely comic book related. I know, it’s quite disappointing.
Last year, SyFy got in on the fun. And while they seem to be a natural fit for such an event, their first attempt did fall into the trapping of discussing movies or featuring guests that are a bit removed from geek culture at times. Still, we hope they come back stronger given this description:
“For the second year in a row, SyFy telecasts live from the heart of San Diego Comic-Con. Bringing the hottest party of the summer to the fans, with direct access to the biggest stars, breaking news, insider party coverage, exclusive content and sneak peeks of the most anticipated films and TV series, each night will bring you the news you need to know from the ‘Con.”
Seeing as how they already have series based on comic book properties under their belt such as Dark Matter and Wynonna Earp – in addition to ones in various stages of development like Krypton – this seems like as good of a time as any to promote their own product while also staying true to the audience they’re trying to reach.
Live From Comic-Con is slated to air at 11:00 p.m. EST from Thursday, July 20 through Saturday, July 22.
