Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster Isn’t Blue In Thor: Ragnarok – And Here’s Why

Earth Girls Are Easy is the reason why Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster isn't totally blue in Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi has revealed.

Curious as to why Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster isn’t totally blue in Thor: Ragnarok? Blame Earth Girls Are Easy, according to writer-director Taika Waititi, who told IGN straight up that the creative decision was made “because [Goldblum] did another movie where he was blue.”

That movie is, of course, the 1988 sci-fi/musical/comedy oddity in which Jeff Goldblum starred opposite Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans, and from the image embedded below, you’ll see that all three actors donned a hefty amount of prosthetics for the gig. In a follow-up question, Waititi also added that he didn’t want the extensive make-up to hamper Goldblum’s performance in any shape or form, and therefore settled on a more minimalist costume design in time for Thor: Ragnarok.

Even if his appearance has been altered ever so slightly in the journey from comic to screen, The Grandmaster of Thor: Ragnarok is still a peculiar being down to his very core. In a previous interview, Goldblum described his on-screen persona as a “hedonist, a pleasure-seeker, an enjoyer of life and tastes and smells.” That goes some ways to explaining why he presides over the gladiatorial arena on Sakaar – the Contest of Champions, as it is known officially – after Ragnarok‘s maiden teaser showed him spectating alongside Loki. However, the exact nature of his relationship with Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief is another question entirely.

Elsewhere, earlier this week we learned that both Miek and Korg will feature at some point in Taika Waititi’s star-studded threequel – the latter of whom will be brought to life by the filmmaker himself – which may even include a cameo from Namor the Sub-Mariner. Will it lay the necessary groundwork for a spinoff movie? We’ll find out soon enough.

Thor: Ragnarok lights up theaters on November 3rd.
