Capcom’s unashamedly difficult RPG Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen is getting a re-release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 later this year, the developer has announced. Initially revealed by Famitsu for a Japanese release (via VG247), Capcom has since followed that up with confirmation that the same package is headed to the West by way of the official Dragon’s Dogma Twitter account.

For those wondering what triggered the seemingly spontaneous announcement, this year marks the series’ fifth anniversary, which began back in 2012 with the original Dragon’s Dogma for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A re-release the following year included the core game as well as the Dark Arisen expansion, which added a wealth of new content, including areas, items, bosses and everything in-between. While Capcom has yet to detail what, if any, upgrades this particular version will have over the original, it’s not a stretch to assume that this iteration will follow suit with the PC remaster released last year, which boasts improvements to performance and resolution.

It’s warming to see that Capcom hasn’t forgotten about fans of its lesser-known properties and, depending on how well this version of the RPG – which has often been likened to From Software’s Dark Souls in regards to combat and difficulty – sells, it could provide the boost in exposure that Capcom likely requires to justify a sequel.

As for Dragon’s Dogma Online, an MMO continuation of the series which launched last year in Japan, it’s still painfully unclear whether Capcom ever intends to open its doors to Western audiences, but never say never, eh?
