Is A Live-Action Superman: Red Son Movie On The Way?

The DC Extended Universe is just going to keep on growing for the next few years, with solo movies for the likes of The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg on the way, as well as films introducing the likes of Nightwing, Batgirl, Booster Gold, Lobo and many others all being planned or discussed. If a new report is to believed though, Warner Bros. might be about to expand their cinematic universe even further, and in a very unexpected way.

The DC Extended Universe is just going to keep on growing for the next few years, with solo movies for heroes such as The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg on the way, as well as films introducing the likes of Nightwing, Batgirl, Booster Gold, Lobo and many others all being planned or discussed. If a new report is to believed though, Warner Bros. might be about to expand their cinematic universe even further, and in a very unexpected way.

Den of Geek are claiming that the studio’s currently looking for directors to helm a movie based on Superman: Red Son. The 2003 comic miniseries from Kick-Ass writer Mark Millar told the tale of a parallel world where Kal-El didn’t crash into Smallville, Kansas, as a baby but instead landed in Soviet Russia. It’s an intelligent, dark story which details a very different world – and a very different version of Superman – from the usual DC universe. If you haven’t read it, it comes highly recommended.

The website claims that they got their information from “very, very reliable sources.” Their report is supported by the fact that Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has spoken openly on Twitter about how he pitched a Red Son movie to Warner Bros. a few months ago. Not only that, but Millar also replied to him, saying that the process to find a director for the project is still underway.

The site also managed to get hold of Millar to comment on the report, but he was unable to say whether Red Son is something that WB is “genuinely planning.”

“Is this something they’re genuinely planning? I have no idea. I’ve got pals at Warner Bros but never discussed it with them. I think they’re just going through their back catalog of big books and hoping to lure in good directors as opposed to any particular interest in developing Red Son. There’s always 50 conversations for every comic book movie that gets made and as far as I know this is something that is very much just at conversation stage.”

If Red Son really is in the works, this should have major repercussions for the DCEU going forward. The comic book was part of the Elseworlds imprint, which published stories focusing on various alternate versions of DC’s pantheon of heroes. If Red Son does well then, there could very well be more Elseworlds movies on the way.

We’ll keep you posted once we hear of any further updates, but tell us, would you be interested in seeing a film based on Superman: Red Son? Let us know in the comments section.
