New Geostorm Trailer Promises Destruction On An Epic Scale

Gerard Butler has done it all - when it comes to movies, that is. He's fought against an army of Persians in 300, broken our hearts in P.S. I Love You, and saved the President of the United States not once, but twice, across Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen. With Geostorm though, the Scottish actor is going up against what's perhaps his greatest enemy yet: Mother Nature.

With Geostorm though, the Scottish actor is going up against what’s perhaps his greatest enemy yet: Mother Nature.

Skydance has peeled back the curtain once again to deliver another jaw-dropping trailer for the film, which triggers a storm of biblical proportions. Caught up in the midst of that global catastrophe is Butler’s astronaut, who’s sent to space on a mission to course-correct humanity’s climate-controlling satellites. But those same instruments designed to mitigate natural disasters soon become mankind’s worst enemy, and while suspended in outer space, Butler’s lead character uncovers a plot to assassinate the POTUS – and no, it’s not Aaron Eckhart this time around.

Independence Day alum Dean Devlin is behind the camera here, making his feature film debut with Geostorm and directing from a script penned by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney. Creative turbulence recently forced Skydance to order expensive reshoots ahead of the film’s fall release, when Gotham helmer Danny Cannon was drafted in to steady the ship. Will it be enough to allay fears of a cinematic dud, though? We’ll find out quite soon.

Per Skydance, here’s the official plot synopsis.

After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.

It’s been a long time coming, but Geostorm will finally sweep into cinemas across the world on October 20th. Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Lara, Jim Sturgess, Amr Waked, Ed Harris and Andy García round out the starry ensemble.
