“For centuries our families fought together against their common enemy.” That’s Kit Harington’s Jon Snow, making a desperate plea to form a powerful allegiance between the Starks and what we can only assume to be the Targaryens in order to stem the coming tide of White Walkers and reanimated Wights.
It’s a monumental clash between life and death – between fire and ice – that will unfold across seasons 7 and 8 of HBO’s Game of Thrones, and a new international teaser has arrived today to drum up excitement for the former.
Granted, at seven episodes in length, the show’s penultimate stint on the airwaves is a little shorter than previous seasons, but don’t be fooled into thinking that HBO’s fantasy flagship is about to go out on a whimper. Between reports of super-sized episodes (season 7’s finale is allegedly 81 minutes) and David Benioff and DB Weiss’ promise of eye-popping spectacle, Game of Thrones‘ latest instalment looks set to cram just as much action – if not more – into a shorter space of time, and it all begins on Sunday, July 16th.
In related news, yesterday brought word of two monumental meetings between some of the show’s leading power players, and in the interest of avoiding spoilers, let’s just say Kit Harington’s King of the North is the common denominator in this particular instance.
The seventh, penultimate season of Game of Thrones begins July 16th on HBO. It’ll be followed by an eighth and final season in 2018, before the network launches a prequel series based on the characters and underlying lore of George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire saga. Indeed, Martin is one of the executive producers on board to help foster that Thrones spinoff, and we understand HBO is currently in possession of five spec scripts from the likes of Max Borenstein (Godzilla: King of the Monsters), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), and more.
