“Become Jigsaw.”
Fueling rumors that Michael and Peter Spierig’s upcoming horror sequel focuses on John Kramer’s twisted disciples, and not the man himself, yesterday Lionsgate rolled out a slew of stark one-sheets for Jigsaw and, well, let’s just say they weren’t your average character posters. Rather than placing the spotlight on the film’s ensemble cast, each portrait featured a loyal follower of Kramer’s, replete with blood-drenched pig mask to drive the point home: these protégés intend to bring about a new reign of terror, and in the fallout of Jigsaw‘s first teaser trailer, horror fans are already reeling at the wild traps in store.
Working from a script composed by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, the Spierig Brothers have been tasked with pumping fresh blood into one of horror’s modern-day favorites, and when Michael Spierig was asked to deliver an elevator pitch for Jigsaw, the writer and co-director stated that, “it’s Saw for 2017.” As for this trio of new action shots, below you’ll be able to take a closer look at Callum Keith Rennie (Halloran) and Clé Bennett as (Detective Keith) chasing ghosts (?) and Laura Vandervoort in a spot of bother.
The one question that has sparked heated debate, though, is whether Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw is really serving up a potent dose of nightmare fuel from beyond the grave. It’s all but confirmed that Bell will cameo as the late John Kramer, who was killed off all the way back in Saw III more than ten years ago. But will that take the form of a flashback sequence? Time will tell.
Rounding out the cast list are Mandela Van Peebles, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, and James Gomez.
Between Leatherface and Jigsaw – one prequel; one sequel – Lionsgate is plotting double trouble this Halloween, and Michael and Peter Spierig’s nightmarish scare-fest will actually complete the one-two punch when it lights up theaters on October 27th. Leatherface, meanwhile, is set to chronicle the origins of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre on October 20th.
