Between them, Justice League and Avengers: Infinity War effectively brought the Internet to a standstill throughout the course of the weekend, after Warner Bros. and Marvel showcased their costumed crusaders to those in attendance at SDCC.
The latter tentpole, one which is due to arrive on May 4th of 2018, brings together some of our favorite Marvel mascots…and not a moment too soon. Thanos has planet Earth in his sights, and Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan will stop at nothing until he is in possession of all six Infinity Stones – Infinity Stones that will seemingly give him the power to bring “balance” back to the universe. Exactly what that means is anyone’s guess at this early stage, but it seems some of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes may have to lay their lives on the line to scupper Thanos’ plans for galactic domination.
That show-stopping spectacle was on full display within the leaked trailer for Infinity War, which snuck online earlier today. Following a somber voiceover from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who appears to be sporting a drastic new look in Joe and Anthony Russo’s ensemble movie, the sizzle reel begins with a shot of Thor floating through space.
Cast astray in the cosmos, it isn’t long before Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder collides with the Milano, a ship which belongs to – you guessed it! – the Guardians of the Galaxy. As if that wasn’t enough to leave us giddy with excitement, Hemsworth has confirmed via IGN that this scene in question will actually be teased during Thor: Ragnarok in November.
It is. I think so, yeah. I think you’ll have to watch our film first to understand what Avengers is about.
Ragnarok isn’t the final Marvel movie to release prior to Infinity War – that title belongs to Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther spinoff – but as the third standalone pic to feature Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder, not to mention the added inclusion of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, it’s clear that the events of Taika Waititi’s galactic romp will serve as part of the connective tissue between Avengers: Infinity War and the remainder of the MCU. This is the culmination of everything that has come before, after all, so don’t be too surprised if a handful of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes meet their maker in a year’s time, given how high the stakes are.
Now that Spider-Man: Homecoming has enjoyed its time in the sun, all eyes are beginning to turn toward Thor: Ragnarok. It’ll launch into theaters on November 3rd, before Avengers: Infinity War heralds the arrival of Thanos on May 4th, 2018.
