Doctor Who: Karen Gillan Gives Her Thoughts On Jodie Whittaker

There've been a broad range of reactions to the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, the first woman to play the part in Doctor Who's half-century on TV. While there are a certain amount of extreme opinions floating around, Steven Moffat has claimed - quite rightly - that most fans love the decision. And that's definitely the case with the stars of the show themselves.

There’ve been a broad range of reactions to the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, the first woman to play the part in Doctor Who‘s half-century on TV. While there are a certain amount of extreme opinions floating around, Steven Moffat has claimed – quite rightly – that most fans love the decision. And that’s definitely the case with the stars of the show themselves.

Doctors Peter Capaldi, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, David Tennant and others have expressed their delight at Whittaker being invited into their exclusive club. Meanwhile, companion actors like Pearl Mackie, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and more have celebrated the fact that a woman finally has the keys to the TARDIS.

Now, Karen Gillan becomes the latest Doctor Who star to offer her support for Jodie Whittaker. The Scottish actress played Amy Pond opposite Matt Smith’s Time Lord from 2010-13. She expressed her excitement over the casting choice while chatting with Entertainment Weekly at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, saying the following:

“Yes, Jodie! Yes! C’mon, woooo! We’ve got a female! It’s so exciting…I’m so excited to see what she does with it, I really am. I was gasping, I was staring at my phone like ‘woah – they’ve done it!’ They’ve really done it this time! And it just made me so happy. I think it’s really gonna rejuvenate the show as well. It’s gonna add this whole other layer. It’s gonna be cool.”

It’s good to know that Gillan is still plugged into the world of Doctor Who and excited about the show. After all, her career has literally taken off into space since leaving the sci-fi series as she’s joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. She’ll also team up with every other MCU hero for Avengers: Infinity War next May.

Jodie Whittaker, meanwhile, will make her debut as the Thirteenth Doctor in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special.
