After having witnessed the closing moments to what was a barn-burner of a season finale this past May, many of us would assume that Lucifer’s newborn – and rapidly maturing – son, Jack, would be the next major threat to present itself, but showrunner Andrew Dabb hints that someone else will be causing even greater headaches for our favorite hunters.

Here’s what he had to say when speaking with TV Line at San Diego Comic-Con:

“[Lucifer’s child] Jack is not the biggest threat they are dealing with. It’s an old — let’s call him friend — who we have not seen for many years.”

If that sounds vague, it should help that Dabb added the villain “probably is not currently in our world” and that “he [is] from the alternate world.” From that, we can gather the big bad is indeed male. Immediately, characters who’ve been killed on the Earth we’ve come to know that spring to mind are that of Bobby Singer and Castiel, the latter of whom was murdered in the season 12 finale by angel sword, something we know to cause permanent death. That said, an alternate universe version of Castiel is pretty much the only viable way for actor Misha Collins to return.

Actually, it stands to reason that both those two will return before you know it, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be the threat in question. TV Line threw out the guess of the archangel Michael at Dabb and all he could say is “I’ll plead the fifth on that one,” so we may have gotten our answer.

Supernatural returns for its thirteenth season on Thursday, October 12 on The CW.
