It’s taken an awful long time – too long, perhaps – for Marvel to begin development on its first live-action, female-led superhero movie, but that prolonged wait has been brought to an end thanks to the upcoming Captain Marvel spinoff.
Headed up by the Oscar-winning Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island, Room), the Carol Danvers origin story made a big splash at San Diego Comic-Con last week, where it was revealed that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s standalone pic will take place in the 1990s, and it’ll feature Samuel L. Jackson’s MCU mainstay, Nick Fury. The inclusion of Fury will no doubt strengthen Captain Marvel‘s ties to its overarching universe, but aside from the villainous Skrulls, little is currently known about the story that Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) have rustled up.
With an early 2019 release date on the cards, that’s unlikely to change anytime soon. But Entertainment Tonight has relayed some new intel on Captain Marvel for us to peruse. It’s not much, but the outlet did sit down for a chat with Larson ahead of her appearance in The Glass Castle. It was here where the so-hot-right-now actress expressed her desire to honor Carol Danvers, before addressing the film’s loose comparisons to Wonder Woman.
I may be getting ready, I may not be getting ready! Anything I say I feel is hyper analyzed. I mean, I feel pressure in that it’s a character that people love and are inspired by, and I see that, and so I want to do right by that. And I want people to feel like their character is honored.
ET then asked Larson about whether the runaway success of Wonder Woman adds any pressure, to which the actress replied:
Why is there pressure? I don’t understand why there’s pressure put on women as if it’s the most shocking concept ever that a woman can open a movie — it’s like, it’s kind of a tired concept. We’ve proven it for a long time, so I don’t put pressure on in that way at all.
Captain Marvel is expected to take flight on March 8th, 2019. As things stand, that release date is smack bang in the middle of Avengers: Infinity War and the so-far untitled Avengers 4, which has sparked rumors that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers will appear in either one (or perhaps both!) of Joe and Anthony’s Marvel blockbusters. Stay tuned for more on that one.
