New Captain Marvel Concept Art Gives Us A Better Look At The Hero

It’s taken an awful long time – too long, perhaps – for Marvel to begin development on its first live-action, female-led superhero movie, but that prolonged wait has been brought to an end thanks to the upcoming Captain Marvel spinoff.

Headed up by the Oscar-winning Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island, Room), the Carol Danvers origin story made a big splash at San Diego Comic-Con a few weeks back, where it was revealed that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s standalone pic will take place in the 1990s, and it’ll feature Samuel L. Jackson’s MCU mainstay, Nick Fury. The inclusion of Fury will no doubt strengthen Captain Marvel‘s ties to its overarching universe, but aside from the villainous Skrulls, little is currently known about the story that Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) have rustled up.

With an early 2019 release date on the cards, that’s unlikely to change anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean the studio hasn’t begun to peel back the lid just a little bit on the highly anticipated project. Case in point: during their Hall H presentation at Comic-Con, Marvel released some concept art of Larson as the titular hero.

Unfortunately, it didn’t make its way online and still hasn’t, but Andy Park, who’s worked on many, many films for the House of Ideas, has shared a low-res look at it (seen below), giving those who weren’t in attendance at SDCC a chance to see what all the fuss was about. Admittedly, it’s not much and far from the best quality, but from what we can tell, this appears to be a comics-accurate look for the hero – for the most part – and certainly has us excited to see more. Here’s hoping that a hi-res version is released sooner rather than later.

Captain Marvel is expected to take flight on March 8th, 2019. As things stand, that release date is smack bang in the middle of Avengers: Infinity War and the so-far untitled Avengers 4, which has sparked rumors that Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers will appear in either one (or perhaps both!) of Joe and Anthony’s Marvel blockbusters.

Stay tuned for more on that one, but for now, take a look at the concept art below and feel free to share your thoughts in the usual place!
