Lucasfilm Reportedly Considering Jabba The Hutt Spinoff

Fans have been calling for various beloved Star Wars characters to get their own movies for years, and now we are finally learning that some of these are actually coming to fruition. Yesterday, it was revealed that an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone was in the works, with Stephen Daldry already attached to direct. This was quickly followed up by the news that Lucasfilm were also considering spinoffs for both Yoda and Boba Fett.

Fans have been calling for various beloved Star Wars characters to get their own movies for years, and now we’re finally learning that some of these are actually coming to fruition. This was quickly followed up by the news that Lucasfilm and Disney were also considering spinoffs for both Yoda and Boba Fett.

Now, we can add another – slightly more unlikely – name to this ever-growing list of potential solo films. In Variety‘s write-up of the Obi-Wan story, they briefly mention that “some of the other standalone movies in development include a Jabba the Hutt” film.

This isn’t the first time that a spinoff featuring the slimy gangster has been touted. Back in 2015, acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro revealed that he’d love to make a Jabba movie, pitching it as a mix between Star Wars and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather.

“I would do the sort of ‘Godfather‘ saga the Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control,” said del Toro. One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup, you know?

Assuming Variety are on the right track with their claim, let’s hope that Lucasfilm get del Toro on board to helm the Jabba spinoff ASAP, as he’s clearly very passionate about the project. Plus, his visually-rich style of directing would be a fascinating match for the world of Star Wars, don’t you think?

If another rumour is to be believed, we won’t even have to wait until his solo movie materializes to see the Hutt again on the big screen. That’s because it’s previously been reported that Jabba may feature in the upcoming Han Solo prequel. The spinoff, directed by Ron Howard, is the second Star Wars Anthology entry after Rogue One and arrives in cinemas on May 25th, 2018.

If Lucasfilm does indeed go ahead with this proposed Jabba the Hutt flick though, tell us, what would you like to see from it? As always, take to the comments section and let us know!
