We have some sad news today for fans of the Twelfth Doctor. Peter Capaldi has heavily hinted that he doesn’t want to return to Doctor Who, even for a special, once he vacates the show after this year’s Christmas episode.

While attending a Q&A at San Francisco Comic-Con, the Scottish actor was asked by a fan whether he would be interested in appearing in one of the multi-Doctor team-up stories that the sci-fi series dabbles in from time to time. Surprisingly, he revealed that he doesn’t think he would be.

“I think when you should go, you should go. Even when I was a kid I believed [the Doctor] was this weird and wonderful thing, so if he kept showing up all the time in Big Finish or in multi Doctor stories he was more available. I don’t know. Maybe. But not for a while.”

This is an interesting reply from Capaldi, as he recently gave a very different answer to the same question. A few weeks back, he said he was “quite happy” to appear in the show again in a few years time. While he doesn’t close the door on it completely in this new statement, the actor seems a lot less eager to return. Maybe the question of whether he wants to continue his association with Doctor Who is just something that Capaldi’s still processing right now and as such, his opinions on the issue may not be fully-formed yet.

Even if this is it for the Twelfth Doctor, at least we’ve seen him take part in two multi-Doctor stories already. Fittingly, they bookend his time on Doctor Who. He made his debut in an incredibly brief cameo in the 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor” and will exit with “Twice Upon A Time,” which will unite the Doctor with his first incarnation (played by Harry Potter‘s David Bradley).

Make sure to catch that on Christmas Day, as it could be the last time Peter Capaldi ever sets foot in the TARDIS.
