Melissa Benoist Teases New Supergirl Costume For Season 3

When I say that we've come a long way when it comes to superhero costuming in live action, you'll probably agree with me. Years ago, it seemed like nobody was able to think outside of the spandex box, but today, we're treated to one sweet looking suit after another. Often given the impression that each costume is both utilitarian and stylish, we now wholeheartedly believe why these characters look the way they do.

Obviously, The CW has been no exception, offering up some incredible costume designs of their own. To date, the Green Arrow has worn something new each year, with seasons 4 and 5 having seen considerable upgrades. Likewise, the Flash is getting similar treatment and, understandably, eyes are turning toward Supergirl.

Admittedly, the current costume worn by Kara Zor-El is fantastic in its own right and has inspired cosplayers since its introduction. Still, it’s undeniable that comic book fans would probably go nuts if she were to don something similar to, say, Michael Turner’s design popularized by Superman/Batman: Supergirl.

Well, according to Melissa Benoist herself, she confessed to a wardrobe change when recently speaking with Entertainment Weekly:

“There is a different suit that I will be wearing at some point this season, but I won’t tell you when or to what capacity. It’s cool, though.”

Now, you have to admit that her choice of words is quite intriguing, doubly so because the outlet added the costume may not remain a permanent fixture. To be quite honest, we can’t help but recall what looked to be a black Green Arrow costume that was teased not long ago, thus making us wonder if this has something to do with that.

Having said that, we ask you to bear with us, because it wouldn’t surprise us at all if this fall’s DC TV crossover were to make use of evil doppelgangers of our favorite heroes, possibly originating from Earth-X. Set to be the backdrop for the upcoming CW Seed animated web series Freedom Fighters: The Ray, that universe saw the Nazis win World War II and, likewise, their versions of Green Arrow, the Flash and Supergirl (dubbed Overgirl) are of a different ideology. So, if this pans out, just remember that we called it.

Supergirl returns for its third season on Monday, October 9 on The CW.
