Soon enough, DC won’t be the only comic book publisher able to lay claim to having a shared universe residing within The CW’s prime time lineup. We say that because yet another Archie Comics property will get the live action treatment in the 2018-19 television season, as a new Sabrina The Teenage Witch series will stand alongside Riverdale.
Right now, details remain sketchy, but Variety reports that the spinoff will be based on the awesome horror comics that have come to us be way of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Additionally, the series is described as “being tonally in the vein of horror classics like Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal  while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit,” which aligns with the source material.
Quite appropriately, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, chief creative officer of Archie Comics, will serve as writer and executive producer, having already penned the comic book series on which this endeavor is based. Also joining him from Riverdale will be Lee Toland Krieger, who’ll direct and executive produce. Not surprisingly, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater will round out the EP club.
To be honest, this news has been filed under the “any day now” category for some time, as Sabrina has been teased in the past by the creative team but, well, we called this very scenario long ago. That said, one would think it best to introduce her at some point during the second season of Riverdale, thereby allowing her to springboard into her own series the following year. The only major deviation from the comics is that it’ll have to be modernized as opposed to taking place in the 1960’s.
