Flashpoint Script Reportedly Turned In, Hunt For Director Continues

I think it’s safe to say that we were knocked on our collective rears when a Flashpoint movie was announced at San Diego Comic-Con back in July. Granted, we’ve known that Warner Bros. have been keen on the idea of bringing the Scarlet Speedster to the silver screen for some time now, but an origin story was probably what we were all expecting – not an adaptation of one of DC Comics’ most definitive tales to have been produced in this decade.

For those unfamiliar, Geoff Johns’ 2011 miniseries saw the Flash go back in time to save his mother’s life. In doing so, he royally screwed up the timeline, creating a world filled with darker heroes. Eventually, he (kind of) set things right, thereby allowing DC to do a linewide reboot in the form of the New 52. And, in the time since, this arc has been quite faithfully adapted as an animated movie, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and served as loose inspiration for season 3 of The Flash TV series.

While no specific theatrical date has been nailed down, a 2020 debut is somewhat expected. But regardless of whenever the opening ends up being, a capable director needs to be enlisted because, let’s face it, this movie could end up being just as grandiose and important to the DC Extended Universe as Justice League – if not more. With many fans expecting it to have great ramifications on the rest of the line – quite possibly The Batman – the studio will need to get the ball rolling before long.

Well, according to Variety’s Justin Kroll, things are starting to come together, with the script having been turned in earlier this week.

In case you’re wondering what some of those abbreviations were referring to, “L&M” was in reference to Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have since moved on to direct the big screen adaptation for Andy Weir’s latest novel, Artemis. You probably figured out the followup Tweet was speaking of Robert Zemeckis, who may prove to be a great fit for Flashpoint, but we advise that you not hold your breath. Still, we hope a decision is made before long, as this movie would be a dream come true.
