Supergirl season 3 continues next week with episode 3, titled “Far From The Tree,” which will be a must-watch installment for fans of Martian Manhunter. Not only does it see the return of M’gann M’orzz AKA Miss Martian (Sharon Leal), but J’onn J’onzz (David Harewood) will also meet his long lost father, M’yrnn J’onzz (Carl Lumbly).
Longtime DC TV fans will know that Lumbly is perfect casting as J’onzz’s dad, given that the actor previously voiced Martian Manhunter himself in the beloved Justice League animated series and its follow-up Justice League Unlimited. He’s still the definitive version of the Last Son of Mars for many fans of a certain age, so it’s great that he’s returning to the DC family in Supergirl. On top of Smallville‘s Erica Durance also coming aboard as Kara’s mother Alura, this season of the show is full of brilliant legacy castings, and we absolutely love it.
It won’t be all happy families when J’onn and M’yrnn reunite, however, as there will be a divide between them over how the former has gone native during his long time on Earth. Exec producer Andrew Kreisberg recently explained:
“The irony is [J’onn] becomes reconnected with his father and his father thinks, ‘Oh my God, you’ve gone so Earth-man.’ So for J’onn, it’s this realization that he’s not quite the alien that he thought he was, and what that means to him, and if we’re reconnecting with his Martian heritage, how important is that to him?”
The promo images also give us a hint at Alex and Maggie’s wedding shower, which will be attended by Alex’s mother, Eliza Danvers (meaning a welcome new guest spot for Helen Slater). We’ll also meet Maggie’s estranged father (24‘s Carlos Bernard) in the episode. Though things look to be going well between the couple at the party, Chyler Leigh previously teased that the pair still have issues to work out.
“You see them work through quite a few things where you have your worlds colliding, where they’re continually learning new things about each other. For the first several episodes, Alex is figuring out more and more who she is, and what she wants.
Supergirl airs Monday nights on The CW.
