After several seasons of outright denial, it was finally revealed earlier this month that The Walking Dead and its spinoff Fear The Walking Dead would be crossing over at some point in the future. We can expect one character from one of the shows to turn up on the other, and though we’ve heard nothing official just yet, fans have been reeling off theories about who might be involved.
The most believable and in-depth of these is the idea that Michael Cudlitz is going to return as Abraham Ford at some point in Fear season 4. It’s such a thorough, well thought out theory that it even caught the eye of The Walking Dead exec producer Greg Nicotero, with him labeling it as “super smart.” While that seemed to add a lot of credence to the idea, Nicotero has now claimed that the fans are still way off the mark.
When asked if anyone had guessed what would happen in the crossover yet, he replied in the negative:
“Nope, not yet. I love the fan theories. The Abraham one was certainly intriguing and definitely my favorite. I’m not sure when it’s gonna take place. I don’t know when we’re actually introducing that. Listen, the fans come up with some great ideas. Even if they were on point, you know I can’t tell you that!”
Still, we shouldn’t take this is as fact. As Nicotero says, he couldn’t let on even if the fans were on the right track about the crossover. With the Abraham idea, in particular, there’s just too much evidence stacking up for that to turn out to be nothing.
For one, there were some potential seeds sown in Fear‘s season 3 finale and Michael Cudlitz has even teased a comeback himself on social media. Maybe Nicotero is being on the level with us here, but something tells us he’s attempting to deliberately mislead the fans.
While we wait for more concrete info on the crossover to materialize, we have a whole new season of The Walking Dead to sink our teeth into in the meantime, as the show’s 100th ever episode, “Mercy,” premieres tonight at 9PM on AMC.
