CBS Renews Star Trek: Discovery For Second Season, But It May Not Return Until 2019

It’s official: Star Trek: Discovery will live long and prosper all the way into season 2.

Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Starfleet’s galactic mission is now expected to span into 2019 after Discovery set a “new record for subscriber sign-ups in a single day, week and month” on CBS All Access. No further details were disclosed, such as season 2’s total episode count, though it’s safe to assume that Star Trek: Discovery will stay put on the digital service, as opposed to beaming over to network TV.

It’s also unclear if Discovery‘s second season will be split into two halves to coincide with the first, which is about to reach its midseason break on November 5th. The final seven episodes will then premiere in January, as Michael Burnham’s journey begins to near its conclusion – for now, of course.

In light of today’s renewal, Marc DeBevoise, CBS Interactive’s President and Chief Operating Officer, released the following statement:

In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise. This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.

Exactly where Star Trek: Discovery goes from here is another question entirely. For instance, will the Klingon War spill over into season 2? And can we expect CBS’ series to branch off and explore other members of the USS Discovery crew? Time will tell.

Closer to home, the opening and overly successful first season of Star Trek: Discovery will conclude early next year, at which point CBS will begin laying the foundations for season 2. An early 2019 release date is said to be the target, according to series producer Alex Kurtzman.
