Gal Gadot Confirms Wonder Woman Retcon

Continuity can be a tricky butterfly to pin amidst Hollywood’s shared universes.

With so many characters and spinoff movies to consider, a coherent throughline is often lost underneath all of the spectacle and mind-numbing action. And though there are a number of high-profile examples littered throughout Marvel’s portfolio and the DC Extended Universe, it didn’t take long before comic book fans took notice of the Wonder Woman retcon.

As you’ll no doubt remember, the Diana Prince of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is a far cry from the one reintroduced in Patty Jenkins’ solo movie. The latter is, of course, a prequel, and therefore allows its creators to flesh out a backstory for the Immortal Warrior. But in light of Wonder Woman‘s runaway success, DC fans looked back on Batman V Superman – and, specifically, this line from Miss. Prince: “100 years ago, I walked away from mankind” – with a new perspective.

The two don’t exactly match, and Diana’s deflated attitude toward humanity only undercuts Steve Trevor’s selfless act.

All of this was presented to Gal Gadot during Justice League‘s ongoing press tour and, to her credit, the actress offered a remarkably frank and candid explanation to confirm that, yes, Wonder Woman was retconned soon after Batman V Superman hit theaters.

Per Screen Rant:

None of us knew exactly…exactly what’s the backstory of Wonder Woman. And once they decided to shoot the solo movie, [the] Wonder Woman movie, and we started to dig in and understand the core of the character, we realized that actually there is no way that Wonder Woman will ever give up on mankind. The reason why she left the island was because she wanted to make their life better and safer. They are her colleagues, so I’m giving you a very honest answer, that it was sometimes, you know, creative processes establish something that is not necessarily the right decision. But then you can always correct it and change it. So Wonder Woman will always be there as far as she [has] concerns for mankind.

Wonder Woman is now available on Blu-ray and DVD. Its sequel, on the other hand, has been slated for a release in December of 2019. But if you’re itching for more Diana Prince, Justice League is right around the corner.
