Marvel fans are forever annoyed that, as awesome as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is, it can’t be a complete recreation of the comic book world so long as Fox has the rights to the X-Men and everything that comes with that franchise. It turns out it’s not just fans who get bummed out by this, either, but also the filmmakers of the MCU.
When asked by someone on Twitter which other Marvel character he would like to have brought into Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi went with Deadpool. But, as we all know, that option was completely off the table due to, as Waititi puts it, “laws n sh*t.”

You can see why the director would have loved to have included Deadpool in his movie. Thanks to the new madcap comic tone he brought to the Thor franchise, Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth would have been a perfect fit for Ragnarok. They just would have had to tone down the character’s signature R-rated humour to suit the film’s PG-13 certificate. It obviously would have been awesome to see Wade Wilson team up alongside Thor, Hulk, Loki and Valkyrie as one of the “Revengers,” but hey, it just wasn’t meant to be.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that a director wanted to link Deadpool in with the MCU, either. In an early version of Stan Lee’s cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, writer/director James Gunn had Lee referencing his previous cameo as a strip club DJ in Deadpool. It’s unknown why this was eventually replaced with a callback to Captain America: Civil War, but it was likely to do with complicated rights issues.
Not that Thor: Ragnarok needed Deadpool to bolster its cast, mind you. What with the aforementioned “Revengers,” as well as cameos for Doctor Strange and one other surprise Avenger, there are more than enough Marvel heroes running around the threequel without the Regenerating Degenerate jumping aboard, too, don’t you think?
