Last year, Warner Bros. treated us with the awesome Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, which saw the likes of Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprise their roles of Batman, Robin and Catwoman, respectively. Being essentially the beginning to a fourth season we never received, it surpassed expectations by retaining the feel of the classic 1960’s television series, while also featuring grandiose action scenes that could’ve never been accomplished on the budget of the show.
Not being content to rest on their laurels, the fine folks who put together DC’s wonderful animated movies continued the legacy with Batman vs. Two Face, a followup that may have very well been the brand’s best offering this year (you can check out our review here). But with West’s recent passing being an unfortunate reality, one would only assume that the book has been closed on the Bright Knight.
Well, according to Ward, the immortal Boy Wonder himself, we shouldn’t assume anything, as he dropped this bombshell when speaking with Digital Spy:
“I don’t know about that. I don’t know about that, but I’m not going to say any more. All I know is I’m not allowed to talk about it. So I’m just saying factually that your statement would not necessarily be correct.”
Given that Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face were said to have been recorded back-to-back, it’s very possible that a third installment we don’t know about could already be in the can. Regardless, these characters belong to Warner Bros., and it’s up to them as to what lies ahead, something Ward pretty much said:
“I don’t know what they’re going to do in the future. It all depends on how, from a business standard, the movie does. But I will tell you this: Warner Bros knows exactly what they’re doing. If Warner Bros decides to make another one, or more, who knows what the future holds?”
Obviously, only surviving members of the original cast were the only ones able to come back for the recent animated flicks. But in this longtime fan’s opinion, it may be considered to be in poor taste if anyone other than West himself were to voice this particular version of Batman.
