Much like Ant-Man and the Wasp before it, the so-far untitled Avengers 4 is nearing the end of principal photography.
Joe and Anthony Russo’s mystery sequel initially stepped in front of the cameras back in August, when the filmmaking duo was just putting the final touches to Avengers: Infinity War – look for that one to premiere in May of 2018. But now that the finish line is in sight, and rampant fans continue to pore over every Marvel-related set photo on the Internet, CBM has today uncovered the latest Instagram post from Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), which may well be hiding a story clue in plain sight.
The Phase One Avenger recently hosted a charity event at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, and the guest list was a suitably star-studded affair. Not only did it include Mark Ruffalo (Thor: Ragnarok) and Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson, but there was also room for Frank Grillo, who’s been tipped for a cameo role as Crossbones in Avengers 4. What’s more, below you’ll be able to spot Maximiliano Hernández, who played Agent Jasper Sitwell in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
For the record, Downey’s Instagram was captioned: “ATL friends! Come one, come all to our benefit production of #OurTown tomorrow night ONLY, featuring some of your fav Avengers as well as yours truly!”
Hernández was one of many Hyrda sleeper agents populating The Winter Soldier, and was ultimately killed off by the time the credits rolled – ditto for Crossbones (AKA Brock Rumlow), who was crushed underneath a falling building in Civil War.
But in keeping with the golden rule of comics (read: nobody really dies, save for Uncle Ben and Bruce Wayne’s parents), we’re now beginning to think that Avengers 4 may carve out room for a handful of surprise cameos. The Russo Brothers have already vowed to include a ton of “unexpected characters” in Avengers: Infinity War, so resurrecting Crossbones and/or Agent Jasper Sitwell certainly isn’t off the table.
Avengers 4 is due in theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
