Benicio Del Toro Says Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s DJ Character Is Neither Hero Nor Villain

Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Rose and DJ – the three buzzworthy human additions to the cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The first two hail from the ranks of the Resistance, and will be played by Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran. But it’s Benicio Del Toro’s roguish DJ character who has sparked the most debate among the Star Wars community.

Described as an “enigmatic figure whose tattered, threadbare clothes and lackadaisical attitude conceal a sharp mind and expert skills,” DJ has already drawn comparisons to the great Han Solo for his sense of swagger. However, Del Toro himself has offered up some new intel relating to his character in The Last Jedi, and it seems he’s neither a hero, nor a villain – meaning he doesn’t exactly side with the Resistance or the First Order.

SciFi Now (via Screen Rant) caught up with the Oscar-winner to discuss his first foray into Lucasfilm’s Star Wars franchise, which is arguably stronger now than ever before, what with plans in place for multiple anthologies (see: Han Solo, Obi-Wan) along with an entirely new trilogy from the mind of Rian Johnson.

But on the topic of DJ, in particular, Del Toro remained coy, stating:

Maybe you could find him in a Bob Dylan song or a Tom Waits song. Or maybe in a Dostoyevsky novel. You’ll find DJ in one of those stories. You don’t know what he is. But that’s the idea… You don’t know if he’s good or bad.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been penciled in for release on December 15th, and it’ll seemingly herald first-look promos for two of 2018’s biggest movies: Solo: A Star Wars Story, and a little-known Marvel project called Avengers: Infinity War. The latter is expected to unveil its first teaser early next month, before it’s attached to screenings of The Last Jedi.
