Coming out of Suicide Squad, there’s wasn’t an awful lot to salvage from David Ayer’s muddled, CG-laden mess other than Harley Quinn, the scenery-chewing femme fatale brought to life by Margot Robbie.
Indeed, it was Robbie’s gleeful performance that resonated with fans – more so than any other member of Task Force X – so it’s small wonder why Warner Bros. has decided to double down on her Harley Quinn for the foreseeable future.
Up first is a direct sequel to Suicide Squad, after Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) pipped Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra at the post to land the coveted gig, while we understand the Powers That Be have also drawn up plans for Gotham City Sirens and Joker and Harley Quinn, an embryonic spinoff centering on the fiery, “messed up” love affair brewing between the two DC icons.
As a matter of fact, Margot Robbie is confident that we’ll see her suit up as Gotham’s Clown Princess of Crime sometime next year, while we’re now learning that the actress is developing another Harley spinoff that’s completely unrelated to those three aforementioned projects: Suicide Squad 2, Sirens and the Joker/Harley offshoot.
Chatting to MTV (via ComicBook.com), Robbie revealed that she’s been working on the mysterious project for close to two years, meaning that this one was likely fast-tracked into development during the production of Suicide Squad.
Yeah, I’ve been working on it for two years now. I mean, it’s hard to kind of talk about it, because all the stuff is kind of under lock and key. But I’ve been working on a separate spinoff Harley thing for a while now.
No other details were disclosed at press time – it is under lock and key, after all – but this certainly cements Harley Quinn’s future (and Margot Robbie’s) in the DC Extended Universe. Word is that Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 will be the next to enter production in early 2018, so stay tuned.
