The refit for the flagship BBC sci-fi series undoubtedly starts with a changing of the showrunning guard, with Steven Moffat departing to make way for the incoming Chris Chibnall. This change in leadership is evidently having something of a trickle-down effect, with alterations being made to both the fabric and format of episodes, too. But that’s not all, as the show will also be getting an upgraded look when it returns, thanks to some fancy new cameras.

That’s right, folks. The BBC is supplying the crew with new equipment in the form of cameras and lenses that will give Doctor Who a “touch of big screen dazzle.” Without getting too much into the technical side of things, the goal is to provide season 11 with a more cinematic look, with a representative for the show’s production house saying the following:

“The BBC have made a monumental leap here to enhance the look of Doctor Who and I’m sure the fans will not be disappointed with the distinctly cinematic results that this lens and camera combo will afford them.”

Though it may not make a massive difference, it’ll certainly be nice for fans to be able to watch Jodie Whittaker travel through time and space with some improved visuals. The actress won’t be alone on her journey, either, as Bradley Walsh will assume the famous companion role and he’ll be joined on the casting docket by Tosin Cole, Mandip Gill and Sharon D. Clarke.

Closer to home though, Doctor Who will finally – finally! – swing its doors open to a female Doctor this festive season thanks to “Twice Upon a Time.” The star-studded special will also signal Peter Capaldi’s final appearance in the hit BBC series, and director Rachel Talalay recently called Capaldi’s regeneration scene a “tour-de-force.” December 25th is the date for your diaries, folks.
