Karen Gillan’s post-Doctor Who career might be going from strength to strength – for starters, she’s set to star in one of the biggest blockbusters of all-time, Avengers: Infinity War, next year – but she’s still got an eye on returning to the TARDIS some day.
While talking with Radio Times ahead of the release of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in the UK, Gillan got chatting once again on how ecstatic she is that Jodie Whittaker has been cast as the Thirteenth Doctor, praising both the actress herself and the decision to gender swap the Time Lord.
I’m more excited than ever! I think that was the best, most perfect choice. She’s an amazing actress. I can’t wait to see what she does with the role, and I’m just so happy that they’ve cast a female, because there have been so many sceptical people for so long. Questioning whether a woman can play the role! Which is so backwards, frankly. Of course a woman can play the role.”
When asked if she would have enjoyed playing Amy Pond in the show opposite a female Doctor, the Guardians of the Galaxy star sounded into the idea, but made clear that she wouldn’t swap her Doctor Who leading man, Matt Smith, for the world.
“That would have been really cool, yeah! Although I’m always loyal to my Doctor, Matt Smith.”
Finally, on the subject of Smith, Gillan was prodded for a potential return to the sci-fi series. After all, the Eleventh Doctor himself recently made clear that he would don his bow tie and fez again in a heartbeat. Thankfully, his co-star feels the same way and admitted that she’s “always trying” to find a way to return to the show.
“Yeah – I’d always be open to that. I’m always trying to get back in the TARDIS.”
So is this a possibility? Well, old Doctors and companions don’t usually come back to the series that often, but there are rumours that we could be seeing some faces from the past in this month’s Christmas special. Could Peter Capaldi’s last hurrah feature a sneaky reunion for the Doctor and Amy, then? Only time will tell, but you certainly wouldn’t hear any complains from us if it did.
