Ahead of the episode’s arrival on December 25th, the BBC have dropped this new clip (above) from the upcoming outing, titled “Twice Upon a Time.” The minute-long sequence throws us right in the middle of the action, with the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi), the First Doctor (David Bradley), Bill (Pearl Mackie) and Mark Gatiss’ mystery WWI Captain making a getaway in the TARDIS. Except, there’s a twist.

Following on from the end of the season 10 finale, “The Doctor Falls,” in which the Doctor encountered his original self in the Antarctic, “Twice Upon a Time” will see the two Time Lords and their friends caught up in a new adventure when time starts freezing. The clip gives us a hint of this with the beautiful shot of snowflakes hanging in the air.

It also looks like someone will pinch the TARDIS with a crane, which would usually leave the Doctor stranded. Luckily, the First Doctor’s own TARDIS is nearby. Fans of classic Who will appreciate the Police Box matching the different shaped model used in the show’s early days. Likewise, we briefly get a glimpse of the retro interior of the TARDIS before the time machine launches into the time vortex and the clip ends.

Finally, it’s nice to see the Doctor and Bill’s dynamic again, with Pearl Mackie’s companion rattling off 20 questions a minute like the good old days of… earlier this year. Bill did leave the Doctor’s side at the end of the last season, but she’s back to see Peter Capaldi off in his final hour, before he regenerates into Jodie Whittaker by the conclusion of the special.

Be sure to catch Doctor Who “Twice Upon a Time” this Christmas on BBC One/America.
