Colin Trevorrow’s Initial Pitch For Star Wars: Episode IX Brought Daisy Ridley To Tears

Before he was removed from his post, Colin Trevorrow's initial pitch for Star Wars: Episode IX seemingly brought Daisy Ridley to tears.

Cast your mind back to a time when Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) was still attached to Star Wars: Episode IX, and you’ll likely recall the director’s pledge to deliver a “deeply and profoundly satisfying” answer to Rey’s parentage. How times change.

Back in September, Trevorrow and Lucasfilm parted ways over “creative differences,” prompting the latter to place Episode IX in the capable hands of J.J. Abrams, who was originally responsible for resurrecting the Star Wars saga more than two years ago.

It’s a high-profile departure that resulted in a great disturbance in the Force, and ever since, the franchise’s impassioned fanbase have pondered over what could have been. After all, Rian Johnson seemingly set the record straight via Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which tells us that Rey’s lineage is no longer a point of concern. Or is it?

Speculation aside, it appears Trevorrow’s original idea was enough to bring Daisy Ridley to tears, as Saturday Night Live star Bobby Moynihan revealed on a recent episode of Collider’s Jedi Council podcast. First spotted by Screen Rant, Moynihan recalled an encounter with Daisy Ridley where she took him aside and detailed what’s in store for Rey. Cue the waterworks.

Of course, this was back when Trevorrow and Derek Connolly script was still intact, so we’ll likely never know the full extent of their “deeply and profoundly satisfying” answer to Rey’s parentage.

Beyond Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is allegedly bracing for another spell of additional photography, Episode IX will close out the Skywalker Saga on December 20th, 2019. And after that? Lucasfilm and Rian Johnson plan to launch an entirely new trilogy replete with original characters and far-flung planets not yet explored.
