Supernatural Midseason Premiere Trailer Plants Seeds For Wayward Sisters Spinoff

Ever since the midseason finale of Supernatural concluded, we the fans have been kind of left in the dark as to where the series would go next. Sure, we knew that a backdoor pilot for the Wayward Sisters spinoff was next on the agenda, but all promo videos being circulated were very, very vague to say the least.

As it so happens, this decidedly meaty trailer for the midseason premiere is enough to tide us over for the next week, but does focus more on the hopeful spinoff than addressing what’s next for Sam and Dean Winchester themselves. When we really think about it, though, it makes sense that the producers not show all their cards at this moment, likely wishing to preserve the mystique of the horrific alternate universe known only to us as “the Bad Place” until it’s showtime.

Appropriately enough, it’s Claire Novak (Kathryn Love Newton) who takes over narration here, especially when you consider that Jody Mills will tell her that “The boys have been on a hunting trip and haven’t been home in a few days,” thus echoing what Dean said to Sam in Supernatural‘s very first episode. And, who knows, maybe a reunion with her not-dad, Castiel, is in the cards.

For more on “Wayward Sisters,” be sure to check out the official synopsis below:

KATHRYN NEWTON, KIM RHODES, KATHERINE RAMDEEN, BRIANA BUCKMASTER, CLARK BACKO AND YADIRA GUEVARA-PRIP RETURN – When Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) go missing, Jody Mills (guest star Kim Rhodes) calls Claire Novak (guest star Kathryn Newton), the rebellious rogue hunter, and tells her it is time to come home – they need to find the Winchesters. Claire returns and reunites with Alex Jones (guest star Katherine Ramdeen), who has stayed behind with Jody and tries to balance a “normal” life with being a part time hunter.

While Jody is happy to have Claire home again, she’s plagued by Patience’s (guest star Clark Backo) disturbing vision involving her adopted daughter. Claire and Alex search for Kaia Nieves (guest star Yadira Guevara-Prip), the dreamcatcher responsible for opening the rift that Sam and Dean went through, as she holds the key to their whereabouts. Jody calls her friend, Donna Hanscum (guest star Briana Buckmaster), to round out the team and the women head off on the most important hunt of their lives. Phil Sgriccia directed the episode written by Robert Berens and Andrew Dabb (#1310).

Supernatural returns with new episodes on Thursday, January 18 on The CW.
