The clock is ticking for young Carl Grimes.

Just before Christmas, The Walking Dead mainstay, one who has been a cornerstone of AMC’s zombie drama from the very beginning, suffered a fatal walker bite, indicating that his days are very much numbered.

Shell-shocked, Rick Grimes struggled to process what is undoubtedly the show’s biggest death – so far, at least – and that’s something that can be said about The Walking Dead‘s impassioned community, too, who will be forced to say goodbye to the young, and often times fearless Carl Grimes on February 25th.

That’s the weekend in which season 8 is set to return, and to give viewers an idea of what’s to come, Chandler Riggs previewed Carl’s “emotional” final moments in a candid chat with Entertainment Weekly:

It is gonna be some of Carl’s final moments in the next episode. And though you can see that the story is coming to an end, he does have a lot to say because he’s been watching Rick over the last however many years, and has been learning from him and seeing every mistake that he’s made and every right decision. And he’s turned out to be a really well-shaped leader — kind of suited for this world and an icon for the new age. And so Carl’s just really going to be trying to teach Rick as much as he can.

At the helm of The Walking Dead‘s mid-season premiere is Greg Nicotero – another veteran of the series – and Riggs firmly believes that Carl’s swan song has been placed in capable hands.

It was definitely really nice to have a familiar face to work with for my last episode. Every episode with any director is going to be great, but it was nice having Greg there for the last one.

The Walking Dead season 8 is expected to chew its way onto the small screen on February 25th. And yes, AMC’s flagship has been renewed for another season – sans Scott M. Gimple.
