Omega Underground has the scoop, confirming that production on Wonder Woman 2 is expected to commence on May 28th – four weeks earlier than initially expected – ahead of its planned release in 2019.

Both Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are back on board as director and lead star, respectively, and we recently learned that Kristen Wiig of Ghostbusters fame has come into contention to play the sequel’s big bad, Cheetah, a feline-esque adversary with enough strength and speed to hold her own against Diana. There’s still no word of an official confirmation, though, which tells us that negotiations between Wiig and Warner Bros. are ongoing.

Story-wise, it’s understood that Diana’s second solo adventure – and her first since the wholly forgettable Justice League team-up movie – will be set during the height of the Cold War (i.e. the 1980s), indicating that Patty Jenkins and her team plan to trade trench warfare for subterfuge and nuclear paranoia.

The Expendables co-writer Dave Callaham is the man responsible for Wonder Woman 2‘s story, having signed on to flesh out the original treatment from Jenkins and DC guru Geoff Johns. And while there are still many questions to be answered, fans can continue to look forward to James Wan’s Aquaman movie (December 21st), safe in the knowledge that Diana Prince and her sophomore outing are in safe hands.

Said to be imbued with all of the wisdom, wonder, and grace that made the original so special, Wonder Woman 2 has been slated for a release on November 1st, 2019 – far, far away from the launch of J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode IX.
