Here’s How The Russo Brothers Handled Captain Marvel In Avengers 4

Chatting to ComicBook.com, the Russo Brothers dished on the ways in which Captain Marvel is incorporated into Avengers 4.

Regardless of whether she crops up during Infinity War or not, creatively speaking, the “uber-powerful” Carol Danvers still posed quite the challenge for Joe and Anthony Russo.

As the directors responsible for Avengers 4, the Russo Brothers were tasked with bringing Brie Larson’s heroine into a modern-day setting – remember, the standalone Captain Marvel movie largely takes place in the 1990s, back when Nick Fury had two functional eyes and the Avengers Initiative was but a pipe dream – and while speaking to ComicBook.com, the filmmaking duo dished on their strategy for handling a character who has since been championed as the MCU’s strongest superhero.

Said Joe Russo:

Well for us, with super powerful characters, it’s always about the flaw in the character, how is the character human? How is the character accessible? I have a hard time with comic book characters, I did as a child, that were too powerful because I never feared for them, I never felt like I could relate to them. I think that’s why traditionally Batman is the most popular DC comic character, he’s human. So, it’s important for us when we’re working with uber-powerful characters, to understand their vulnerability on a psychological level.

Bouncing off his brother’s comments, Anthony Russo pointed to the fact that both Infinity War and Avengers 4 pinpoint the inherent vulnerabilities of each character, before thrusting them into a situation in which those weaknesses are put to the test. And the same is true of Captain Marvel’s role in the 2019 ensemble film.

And that’s of course, and then we follow, the way we challenge a character like that is taking them through scenarios that make things more complicated on that vulnerability. And challenge that vulnerability.

To which Joe Russo responded:

Or can we weaken them in some way in which they have to overcome that weakness to succeed.

Following the back-to-back release of Infinity War and Avengers 4 – not to mention Peyton Reed’s summer sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp – all eyes in the industry will begin turning towards Captain Marvel ahead of its own release on March 8th, 2019.
