Despite some back and forth on the matter, Samuel L. Jackson’s barking commander Nick Fury, otherwise known as the founding father of The Avengers, does have a role to play in the standalone Captain Marvel movie. And a big one at that.
As a matter of fact, it seems Carol Danvers was actually the first superhero that Samuel L. Jackson’s ringleader ever encountered back in the 1990s. Because of this, he’ll enjoy a pretty prominent role opposite Brie Larson, with producer Kevin Feige recently saying the following about what to expect from the S.H.I.E.L.D. director:
We wanted to explore a period before Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury had any idea about any of the other heroes and crazy stuff going on in the world. You know, we first met Nick when he told Tony, ‘You’re part of a big universe. You just don’t know yet.’ Well, we want to go back to a time when he didn’t know it yet, and really showcase and announce that Carol Danvers was that first hero that Nick came across.
Of course, with the film taking place in the 90s, that also means the Fury we meet will be much younger than the one we’re used to seeing and today, thanks to some new set photos, we have our first look at the character as he’ll appear in Captain Marvel. In the gallery below you’ll find a few snaps that, while not too revealing, do show off Jackson looking a lot different than he did when we last saw him in the MCU.
It’s impossible to know the context of the scene that him and Larson are shooting here, but it’s nice to get a glimpse of the fan favorite actor regardless. It’ll be interesting to see him encountering a superhero for the first time, too, which no doubt is the event that starts him on the path to creating a whole team of them.
As if all that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, it appears that Captain Marvel is also coming together “extremely well,” after Kevin Feige took a moment to recognize the stellar cast and crew that’s bringing the 2019 solo flick to life.
Per Variety:
You’re going to get the most powerful superhero we’ve ever introduced and what I think is one of the most unique and inspiring origin stories. We are a little less than halfway through filming now. It’s going extremely well, and it’s a great cast on that film.
With a ’90s setting on the cards and a pretty sizeable role for the young, post-Cold War Nick Fury, Captain Marvel will take to the skies on March 8th, 2019.
