When we normally think of Superman duking it out with his quintessential villains, foes such as Lex Luthor, Zod, Brainiac, Doomsday and Darkseid are among the first that come to mind. Still, it’s quite entertaining to see him pitted against atypical enemies from time to time, such as the Clown Prince of Crime himself in the Emperor Joker story arc, or even Black Adam in something like the unforgettable and appropriately titled animated short, Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam.
In fact, it’s a possible onscreen showdown between the Last Son of Krypton and Kahndaq’s protector that we’re here to discuss today. As you may know, there’ve been rumors suggesting those two will square off in an eventual Man of Steel 2 for well over a year now, and it’s admittedly hard to put a face-to-face involving Henry Cavill and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson out of our heads.
Naturally, we tend to take stuff like that with a grain of salt, but it doesn’t help when the actors themselves repeatedly fan the flames. Funny enough, Cavill was the latest to do so, saying the following to MTV at CinemaCon:
“There’s definitely some kind of work towards that. There’s a lot of things spinning around in the universe right now with that. Obviously, if Black Adam does become a character, officially, he will play him. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a Shazam! Black Adam thing first. If it does happen, it would make sense that way, but you never know. Maybe it’ll be a Superman movie and Shazam! will come and help. That’s kind of stealing his limelight though, which is not cool.”
As he pointed out, the epic slobberknocker could take place in a variety of films. Of course, there are whispers of Big Blue appearing in the first Shazam movie, but we know Black Adam likely won’t be in that one. Still, it’s important we not forget that Cavill already has ideas for Man of Steel 2, so it’s wise to not rule out that as being the arena of choice. Plus, with Superman supposedly being poised as the lynchpin of the DC Extended Universe, it’s really anybody’s guess as to where and when it’ll all go down.
