Deadpool 2

Ryan Reynolds Cools Talk Of A Possible Deadpool 3

A third Deadpool movie? Not so fast. According to Ryan Reynolds, the Powers That Be are currently more focused on the X-Force ensemble flick.

Between Drew Goddard’s planned X-Force movie and the imminent launch of Deadpool 2, the Merc With a Mouth is primed for a bright future at 20th Century Fox. And that’s despite ongoing interest from Disney.

He’s the current cover star of Entertainment Weekly, for instance, while Ryan Reynolds is of the belief that Deadpool 2 is a “family film” masquerading as a superhero movie – just as the Merc’s big-screen debut was a love story wrapped up in comic book clothing.

We’ll have to wait until Deadpool 2‘s arrival later this month before we understand the full extent of Reynolds’ unusual elevator pitch, but when the actor was pressed about a possible third installment for his gun-toting mercenary, the film’s lead star played coy, stating that Deadpool 3 is by no means a sure thing.

I don’t know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I really don’t. I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that. I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe. I just think if you’re going to do another Deadpool solo film, you’ve got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.

That’s surprising in and of itself, not least because Deadpool 2 is currently on course for a record $150 million opening weekend in North America, one which would seal its place as the biggest R-rated debut in domestic box office history. A third Deadpool solo flick isn’t entirely out of the question, though, as Ryan Reynolds joked about a possible Sundance hit a la Call Me By Your Name:

I wouldn’t suggest for a second that our writing would be at that level, but I do think that we could go to a lot of very unexpected places. I do think that we could go to a lot of very unexpected places. I’ll just put it that way, but I would love that.

Food for thought, then, but rest assured, Deadpool 2 will be on our screens very soon indeed – May 18th, to be specific, at which point Josh Brolin’s Cable is expected to begin his hunt for Russell (AKA Hot Stuff), the mutant kid played by Julian Dennison.
