Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes and, more specifically, the bond they share is perhaps the very definition of friendship goals.

They’ve been put through the mill, quite frankly, and one need only look to Marvel’s Civil War to see the trials and tribulations that Cap is willing to endure in order to protect his childhood friend.

Which brings us to Avengers: Infinity War. Leading up to the sequel’s titanic showdown in Wakanda, Steve Rogers and a rehabilitated Bucky Barnes reunite for the first time since Civil War‘s post-credits scene…or do they? Turns out Chris Evans’ Phase One Avenger had already paid a visit to Africa’s fictional utopia in order to monitor Bucky’s progress – progress that can largely be traced back to Letitia Wright’s Shuri, whose fierce intellect helped rid all traces of HYDRA.

BUILD Series (h/t Screen Rant) has the scoop, where Joe Russo confirmed that Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes kept in touch during the fallout of Civil War – unlike, say Captain America and Tony Stark.

We make these choices based on the story real estate that we have, and you know, it was appropriate for probably the amount of time that passed for Bucky to be healed since Civil War. Shuri’s been you know, a genius, perhaps the smartest person in the world and… she found a way to repair Bucky when no one else could for many years.

He continued:

So I think for us, I think clearly Steve, who has been on the run since Civil War has been keeping close contact with Shuri and T’Challa. Obviously, he’s been hiding somewhere. I think he’s made his way to Wakanda a couple of times… and that is how we directed that scene, that was not the first time that they were seeing each other since he woke up.

It certainly makes sense from a storytelling perspective, as Steve Rogers is able to guide a small posse of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into Wakanda without so much as batting an eyelid. Spoilers: he’s done it before. Several times, in fact.

Avengers: Infinity War is screening everywhere – save for China – right now, and will likely scoop up an additional $100M-$130M domestic during its second weekend.
