A Quiet Place Director Shares His Spooky Ideas For Planned Sequel

Like it or lump it, there's a sequel to John Krasinski's A Quiet Place in the works, and here, the writer-director-actor shares his ideas for what comes next.

Every year, one genre film comes along and blindsides its audience with a tight script and performances worthy of an Academy Award nomination. And in 2018, that film was A Quiet Place, the Paramount-backed monster movie that scared up a respectable $256 million…so far.

Not unlike Get Out before it, A Quiet Place also nudged its director – John Krasinski, in this case – into the big leagues, and though Krasinski is yet to even put pen to paper, Paramount has already issued the green light on a sequel.

Details are scarce at this early, early stage, but when Deadline caught up with Krasinski to get the skinny on A Quiet Place, the writer-director-actor shared his own ideas about what comes next for the post-apocalyptic story, even if he always considered his passion project to be a standalone movie.

It’s only a short while since the movie came out, but already people are saying, ‘We want to live in this world more,’ which is really interesting. I’m surprised people aren’t like, ‘Nah, we know what this is, and we just want to leave it as it is.’ To be perfectly honest, it was never really on my mind while we were making it. I never really thought of it as an expanded world; I always thought of it as a one-off.

Continuing on, John Krasinski then highlighted the moment in A Quiet Place where numerous fires flare in the distance, which sparked a sudden brainwave in the director’s mind: what if the sequel hopped the fence to explore who was on the other end of those flames…

The thing that I loved in the movie, where my mind kept wandering as we were making it, was the question of who was on the other end of those fires, when the father lights the fire and in the distance, those other fires light up. How did those people survive? How did that old man survive?

In the extreme [situation] these characters are going through, there’s no room to think about that. They’re there, there’s an old man who’s about to scream, they just have to deal with that. I think it would be interesting to see what’s going on elsewhere at this same time.

A Quiet Place is yet to pin down a specific Blu-ray release, but we’ll keep you posted as Krasinski’s classic slithers closer to home video.
