Avengers: Infinity War has slain another record today. Surprised?

After utterly decimating the box office when it opened to an unprecedented $250 million-plus domestically, the third Avengers installment turned its attention to the nine-zero plateau worldwide, ultimately becoming the fastest picture to reach $1 billion after doing so in just 11 days. Yes, 11 days.

Incredibly, it hasn’t even been two weeks yet and Infinity War has already had itself a box office run for the ages, and the record holders continue to submit to the power of Thanos. Having outstripped seven MCU entries to date, the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed cinematic event has now eclipsed another peer at the ticket booth: Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Thanks to an additional $31.2 million at the global box office yesterday – which, in turn, pushed the nineteenth MCU entry’s domestic total to a whopping $461.4 million – it’s now passed the $459 million earned by Age of Ultron on home soil.

Initially believed to be set to bring in $2 billion by The Hollywood Reporter, it now appears that Avengers: Infinity War is tracking below the generous projection, expected to finish at $1.88 billion, according to Deadline. Regardless of where it’ll end off, the Marvel tentpole has emerged as the “first summer movie ever to target $2 billion worldwide,” which is a feat in and of itself.

Hypothetically, though, even if Infinity War were to finish at the low end of the spectrum, $1.88 billion, the film would still become the highest grossing MCU movie worldwide, surpassing the $1.518 billion benchmark set by The Avengers back in 2012. That being said, the Joss Whedon-directed flick earned $623.35 domestically, so Avengers: Infinity War still has some ground to cover in that regard. Something tells us it’ll have no trouble hitting that mark though when all is said and done.
