Jon Favreau’s Star Wars TV Series Set Before The Force Awakens

The Lion King helmer Jon Favreau has confirmed that his live-action Star Wars TV series will take place seven years after Jedi, and feature entirely new characters.

Back in March, we brought you the news that Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man and The Lion King reboot, was bound for a galaxy far, far away.

But whereas the likes of Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones duo, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have agreed to spearhead entirely new film trilogies, Favreau took control of Lucasfilm’s first ever live-action Star Wars TV series. And we now have some clues as to what the director has planned.

During a red carpet interview with Nerdist, Jon Favreau confirmed that his Star Wars show takes place a full seven years after Return of the Jedi, and that it’ll feature brand new characters – not unlike those aforementioned trilogies in the works from Johnson and the Thrones showrunners.

The end product will also air via Disney’s soon-to-be-released streaming platform, and the decision to choose a prequel over, say, another continuation set after The Force Awakens, will no doubt send the Star Wars community into a tizzy, not least because this places it in close proximity to the hit animated series Forces of Destiny.

Story-wise, there are precious few details available for Favreau’s buzzworthy project, though fans can at least take solace in the fact that Lucasfilm’s first live-action Star Wars series is in safe hands – not only has the filmmaker cut his teeth in the blockbuster department (see: Iron Man and The Jungle Book), but he’s also well versed in the franchise, having lent his voice to The Clone Wars all those years ago.

Long before this project begins to take shape, though, the Powers That Be will have their hands full with Solo: A Star Wars Story when it reaches theaters on May 25th.
