Deadpool 2 is now in cinemas, which means we can begin to look to the future of the Merc with a Mouth’s corner of the X-Men universe. As we’ve known for a while, DP will next appear in the X-Force spinoff movie, which this film has paved the way for. Given the character’s scene-stealing personality, you might expect this to be Deadpool 3 in all but name. But, according to star Ryan Reynolds, X-Force will genuinely be more of a team pic.
Speaking to Collider, he explained that he thinks the project will be good for his character, as it’ll allow Deadpool some breathing room. As can be seen in both movies released so far, a film focused entirely on Wade Wilson has to keep ripping up his life and putting him through the ringer. With the stars of the show being X-Force next time around, though, it’ll allow Reynolds to have even more fun, as Deadpool has to get used to being part of a unit.
“I see it being a real ensemble on a lot of levels just because I think it’s interesting for Deadpool to kinda function in the way he does in his own universe. You always get to sort of find some way to position him as the underdog or take everything away from him, but for him to function in an ensemble [in X-Force] is a lot of fun. I think there’s a real opportunity to not burden the narrative by shattering Wade’s life, so then at the beginning our movie you get to have him just be part of the team, which is obviously a very challenging prospect for someone like Wade Wilson.”
As of the time of writing, we don’t actually know who X-Force will consist of. The key three characters have been confirmed as Deadpool, Josh Brolin’s Cable and Zazie Beetz’s Domino, but beyond that, the line-up of the militant mutant group is currently in flux. Deadpool 2 offers a version of the team, of course, but it’s currently unknown whether the likes of Bedlam (Terry Crews), Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgard) and Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) will be back for more.
X-Force is being written and directed by Drew Goddard and is expected to go before the cameras this October. Given that, and the fact that the studio will now be able to study the public reaction to certain characters in Deadpool 2, it’s likely that more specific details on the spinoff will arrive soon – so be sure to stay tuned.
